Dive 2, Hamlet Mating, Casablanca

Hamlets, or fish in the genus Hypoplectrus, are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning that they are both male and female at the same time. Because of this, their mating strategies are quite strange.

Every night, Hamlets pair up and mate multiple times while taking turns being each gender. We dove just before dusk to observe this unusual mating strategy in the act. I've put a video after the gallery if you want to see the mating happen!

We also saw invasive Lionfish (Pterois volitans) as well as toadfish and basket stars. For the latter 2 organisms, my camera's battery had bit the dust, so they aren't included in the photos.
